Philippe MARTIN appointed as head of the Conseil d'analyse économique

Philippe MARTIN, Professor at SciencesPo’s Department of Economics, was appointed as chairman of the Conseil d’Analyse économique January 17th, 2018 by the French Prime Minister. He replaces Agnès BÉNASSY-QUÉRÉ, Professor at Université de Paris I / PSE, whose mandate had come to its end.

The Conseil d’analyse économique is an independent advisory body that reports directly to the French Prime Minister on economic issues. The CAE’s mission is “to inform the governement’s choices on economic affairs through the exchange of viewpoints and its analyses”. The CAE is made up of professional economists who are either academic and recognised for their research or who come from the economic sector of companies.

Before his appointment as President, Philippe MARTIN was one of the academic members of the CAE from 2012 to 2015 and since 2017.

Prior to joining SciencesPo’s Departement of Economics - which he chaired for five years - Philippe MARTIN was Professor of Economics at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, the Paris School of Economics and a member of the Institut Universitaire de France. Before teaching in France, he was an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York assistant  professor in Geneva. He also taught at Ecole Polytechnique and the London School of Economics.

He received the prize of the best French young economist in 2002.

He was economic advisor of Emmanuel Macron (July 2015-August 2016) when he was Minister of the Economy as well as during the presidential campaign.

In addition to being a Professor of Economics, Philippe MARTIN is a Research Fellow at Centre for Economic Policy research (CEPR, London). He is co-director of the macroeconomics program at CEPREMAP.

Philippe MARTIN’s  research focuses on  international trade and macroeconomics. His publications have appeared in the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Review of Economic Studies and the Journal of International Economics among others. He also co-authored a book on economic geography published by Princeton University Press as well as two books published by Éditions de la rue d’Ulm/CEPREMAP. He is a regular participant to the radio show «l’économie en question » on France  Culture.

He graduated from Sciences Po and holds a Phd in Economics from Georgetown University (Washington DC).
